Tennessee’s loss to South Carolina wasn’t enough to change this prospect’s decision.

Daevin Hobbs announced on Friday he would be committing to Tennessee, marking a massive pickup for Josh Heupel’s struggling defense.

Hobbs chose the Volunteers over Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, and Ohio State. He is expected to be an early enrollee, joining Tennessee in December. He is listed as a five-star prospect by On3.

Hobbs thanked his coaches before picking up a Tennessee t-shirt and declaring his intentions to be a Vol.

Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports gave Hobbs a “crystal ball,” projecting the four-star prospect would choose Tennessee.

Hobbs is ranked as the No. 11 defensive lineman in the class of 2023. He is sure to make an immediate impact for Rodney Garner’s group, measuring out at 6-foot-4 and 277-pounds.

The defensive lineman was in Neyland Stadium for Tennessee’s wins against Florida and Alabama. He has been impressed with the Volunteers’ program.

“The game environment, the fans, the direction they’re moving in, their campus,” Hobbs told ON3 about what separates Tennessee before his commitment. “Pretty much, just everything up there. The coaches I like a lot and they send a good message out.”

Hobbs is from Jay M. Robinson in Concord, N.C. The Vols now have 23 commitments for the 2023 class. Before Hobbs’ addition, the Vols ranked 12th in the nation and fifth in the SEC. That ranking is likely to rise after Hobbs’ commitment.
