Tyler “Ty” Redmond, a corner out of Milton (Ga.) High school, is still early in his recruitment. Tennessee football has been one of the first schools to offer Redmond.
He currently holds offers from Ohio State, Florida, Texas A&M, NC State as well as Tennessee.
His story of receiving his Tennessee offer is unique. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel visited Redmond at his previous high school. While he was getting a drink during lunch both defensive back coach Willie Martinez and Heupel approached Redmond.
The rest is history.
“It was crazy,” Redmond told Off The Hook Sports. “First, Heupel went to St. Francis, I met with him. Then the DB coach Martinez invited me to junior day. We went to lunch and I saw Josh Heupel when I was getting a drink. Martinez came with him too. He said ‘Josh Heupel do the thing.’ I was like ‘What thing?’ And then Josh Heupel looked at me and said ‘We’re going to offer you a scholarship.’ Right then and there, it was a very, very surprising offer.”
At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, Redmond impressed Tennessee’s staff with his length and the ability to play press coverage.
“I’m a long, press corner, quick for my size,” Redmond said. “My ball skills (stand out) for sure, getting in and out of my breaks.”
Redmond also values off-the-field intangibles, like being a good student.
“A hard worker, good in the classroom, very coachable,” he used to describe himself off the field.
Redmond started his journey at a smaller Georgia high school, St. Francis in Alpharetta. He got a lot of college attention from colleges by showing out when some of his teammates had college coaches show up to practice. At his new high school Milton, he is teammates with Sharmar Arnoux who recently committed to Tennessee.
“Getting All-State, and being in the All-State team and Region for sure in 7A,” Redmond added. “Just doing things I did in 1A in 7A and staying consistent.”
