Caleb Calhoun and Dave Hooker dove into the Vols’ past for the Tuesday, Jan. 17 Off The Hook Sports podcast. That includes Tennessee football history and news involving a former UT head coach. They also touched on a little bit of basketball news.

Who is the greatest foe Tennessee football vanquished?

On Monday night, the Dallas Cowboys beat Tom Brady for the first time ever. That led to a topic on Tuesday about the most memorable vanquishing of an opposing head coach the Vols ever did. Was it Bear Bryant in 1982, Steve Spurrier in 1998, Steve Spurrier in 2001 or Nick Saban in 2022?

Beyond vanquishing coaches, there are memorable games in which they vanquished foes from a program perspective too. In 1914, they scored their first win over the Vanderbilt Commodores, and they ended another winless streak to the Alabama Crimson Tide in 1995.

Will Jeremy Pruitt return to Alabama?

Rumors are swirling that former Tennessee football head coach Jeremy Pruitt is a candidate to replace Pete Golding as Alabama’s next defensive coordinator. Pruitt was Alabama’s DC in 2016 and 2017 before the Vols hired him, and he also worked as their secondary coach from 2010 to 2012. From 2007 to 2009, he had an off-field role with them.

Obviously, the Vols fired Pruitt for cause amidst a slew of NCAA violations for which they remain under investigation. It’s still not clear if Pruitt will receive a show-cause penalty from the NCAA for those violations. Does that mean Saban should steer clear of this move? That sparked a debate.
