Josh Heupel only picked up one prospect from Virginia in the 2023 Tennessee football recruiting class. Cameron Seldon could end up in the backfield for Tennessee but likely will be a receiver for the Vols.
Here are five things to know about Seldon.
Where Seldon ranks
Seldon is a four-star prospect across the board. He measures out at 6-foot-1 and 220-pounds.
247Sports has Seldon as the No. 36 prospect nationally. They also have him as the No. 2 athlete in his class and the No. 1 prospect from Virginia.
ON3 ranks Seldon as the No. 210 prospect nationally. ON3 also ranks Seldon as the No. 6 athlete in his class and the No. 4 prospect from Virginia.
Rivals holds Seldon as the No. 3 prospect from Virginia and the No. 19 athlete.
Decision to choose Tennessee football
Seldon announced his commitment to Tennessee football in July. He took official visits to Penn State, Maryland, and Tennessee.
The Vols extended Seldon a scholarship offer in November 2021. Seldon visited one other time besides his official, which was to see spring practice.
Tennessee was Seldon’s only SEC offer.
The numbers
Seldon may not have as much hype as others, but he was dominant in high school on both the football field and track.
On the track, Seldon ran a PR of 10.74 seconds in the 100-meter dash. He took home the Virginia class one gold medal for the 100-meter dash. He also took home the state title in the 200-meter hurdles, running it in 22.45 seconds.
On the football field, Seldon ran for 551 yards and 11 touchdowns on 45 attempts. He also caught 18 passes for 365 yards and five touchdowns.
The speedster can have an immediate impact on Tennessee’s wide receiver core, a core that will have a lot of turnover.
Why Tennessee?
Seldon had his fair share of choices, but ended up picking the Vols. Heupel’s up-tempo offense and air raid attack sold Seldon on becoming a Vol.
“I’ll be a great fit,” Seldon told 247Sports. “I like how they run their offense with tempo and play fast. They get their best players the ball. They showed me and elaborated on everything numerous times. They told me I’m a need and not a want.”
Scouting report
Brian Dohn of 247Sports evaluated Seldon, and projected he could turn himself into an early-round draft pick during his time in college.

Has multi-sport profile as basketball player and Class 1A state champ in 100 meters. Holds school record of 10.74 seconds. Dominant high school player at small school on Virginia’s northern neck. Explosive in open field with high-level speed to finish plays in open field. Takes snaps at running back, quarterback and receiver on offense. Smooth athlete with ability to churn out YAC. Good ball skills. Gets off line of scrimmage well and quickly gets into route. Comfortable playing in traffic. Has speed to get behind defensive. Demonstrates ability to close on ball in the air. Willing to be physical at the top of routes and in challenging for 50-50 balls. Change of direction, burst and short-area quickness show best when playing edge or blitzing as linebacker.
