After another successful weekend for Tennessee Football, the Vols have added three-star safety, Edrees Farooq. Farooq announced his commitment on Sunday following his visit for the Orange and White game.
Farooq chose Tennessee over a lengthy list that includes Arkansas, Colorado, Ole Miss, Wisconsin and Penn State among others.
“What I like about the program is that everyone is engaged in the sport, even the environment,” Farroq told 247Sports. “There are no lack offs in any position, and I see a great future with this team. What I like about the defensive fit is that it’s similar to my role in high school, and everyone is a threat on the field.”
Farooq ranks as the No. 561 player nationally, the No. 47 safety and the No. 17 player from Maryland. He attends St. Frances Academy in Baltimore.
The 6-foot, 180-pound safety is the ninth member of Tennessee’s 2024 recruiting class. The class currently is in the top 10.
Farooq has often visited Tennessee with is teammate Ify Obidegwu, who ranks in the top 100 nationally. Obidegwu is a four-star prospect that ranks as the No. 11 cornerback and the No. 2 player from Maryland.
The class is comprised of Four-star quarterback Jake Merklinger, four-star athlete Johnathan Echols, four-star JJ Harrell, four-star cornerback Kaleb Beasley, four-star Marcus Goree Jr. and three-star defensive lineman Carson Gentle along with three-star offensive linemen Gage Ginther and Jesse Perry.
The momentum is picking up for Josh Heupel and his group heading into the summer. Tennessee’s class currently sits at No. 10 overall. Farooq’s addition is a testament to the Vols’ priority on defensive players. The secondary needed to beef up after 2022, and it will likely be in the same situation after 2023.
As for Farooq’s teammate, it’s safe to assume he will be in Obidegwu’s ear about becoming a Vol.Â
